Thoharatul Qulub wal Khudhu’ Li ‘Allamil Ghuyuub
Syeikh Abdul Aziz al-Darini

-Syeikh Abdul Aziz al-Darini

Sometimes when you advise someone to leave a sin, they respond with “But most people do it, it’s not just me!” But if you look for the words “most people” in the Qur’an, you will find that most people “do not know” (7:187), “do not give thanks” (2:243) and “do not believe” (11:17). And if you look for “most of them”, you will find that most of them are “defiantly disobedient” (5:59), “ignorant” (6:111), “turning away” (21:24), “do not reason” (29:23), and “do not listen” (8:21).

So be of the “few”, whom Allah says about them:

“And few of My servants are grateful.” (34:13)

“But none had believed with him, except a few.” (11:40)

“In the Gardens of Pleasure, A [large] company of the former peoples, And a few of the later peoples.” (56:12-14)

(Kitab al-Zuhd, Ahmad ibn Hanbal)

16 Zulhijjah 1435H

I remember the years of questioning, a prying mind and a wandering soul that forgot its own pledge to God. I remember the time when my days felt like a half-remembered dream, time ticking away as my trained eyes tried to find the break between the hands of a spinning fan above.

My mind numb, my heart yearning.

I remember the days when everything that surrounded me felt non-existent, as I fed a hungry mind, as I filled an empty soul with Words from a Red Book. I was vigorous with the pages, my ravenous heart gnawing furiously at what felt like the last piece of bread available. Trying my hardest to search for a meaning that I didn’t realise that the golden lacquer was starting to peel to reveal a dull grey surface beneath. But dull as it may be, the Words within weren’t.

There remains a certain hurt in the deepest corner of my heart whenever I reflect. At times it is strong that only tears may relieve it of its pain, but at times it is only silence that follows. A moment amongst a thousand other moments to myself.. for in the end it is just me buried in the soil alone, in the end it is just between me and Allah.

Good friends are gems, and the Quran the greatest gem of all. Learning is for life - the moment we decide that we have had enough of learning, yet another chapter of ignorance begins. Strong faith too, relies on the consistency of learning to serve as a reminder. And we need to be reminded often, up until our dying day, for we are but forgetful creatures.

I pray for a heart that thinks and sees,
I pray for guidance to never wane.

Tenang.

Tenang.

If it becomes heavy (difficult) to follow the Sunnah (of the Prophet ), then know that there is a disease in the heart.
